If the first three rules of succesful restauranteuring - location, location, and location- were the only criteria for survival Kathy's Lakeside Inn in Forest Lake wouldn't seem a likely candidate heading into it's seventh decade of operation.

Tucked inside a tiny unincorporated burg in the shadows of Lake Zurich, Kildeer, and Hawthorn Woods and best known only to adventurous locals, county surveyors, and off-course golfers from nearby Kemper Lakes, the Inn will never be listed among America's most highly trafficked dining venues.

But for seclusion, authentic rusticity and it's cozy views of oh-so-golden sunsets lingering over the ducks and geese on adjacent Forest Lake (namesake of the village), few Lake County restaurants of any volume level can touch Kathy's Lakeside Inn.

"I am told by many of our customers there are few more tranquil, relaxing restaurant scenes than sitting in our back dining room or on the lakeside patio and just gazing out over the lake and the sunset," said owner Kathy Frolich, whose family has run the Lakeside Inn since 1959.

The colorful mix outside frames a colorful history inside Kathy's Lakeside Inn. Started as a gas station and grocery store in 1937, the property was taken over by the late Herbert "Lucky" Frolich, Kathy's former father in law, in 1959, and rechristened the Forest Lake Tavern. Kathy Frolich became the sole proprietor in 1979, adding dine in food in 1981.

"So many of our patrons tell me that when they are in here they feel like they are up North in Wisconsin," Kathy Frolich said. "That's a mood I am constantly trying to maintain."

Enhancing that mood is straight forward menu of Wisconsin suitable sandwiches headed by such items as various combinations of 1/2 pound fresh ground chuck Lakeside Burgers, Turkey Club Sandwich, Homemade Pizza, and appetizers.

"Once you find us I hope you won't forget us," Frolich said. "Just please make sure to tell anyone who will listen, we're exactly two miles north of Route 22 on old McHenry Road, or three blocks Southeast of Quentin Road on Old McHenry Road."
